Welcome to Protect and Serve—a weekly newsletter that provides reporting, analysis and public opinion research on the barriers to effective law enforcement. 

We bring a clear perspective: Safe communities require accountability for everyone—including the police. The police help hold people who commit crime accountable for their actions. But law enforcement must be held accountable, too—for protecting our communities, solving serious crimes, and building relationships of trust with all communities. Protect and Serve shines a light on the barriers that prevent police departments from solving serious crimes, earning community trust, and recruiting the best and the brightest. We do so not to denigrate law enforcement, but the opposite: to ensure that law enforcement keeps our communities safe and that police departments are places where officers are proud to work.
